MCI Summer Programs

Summer Credit Recovery allows students to make up work they may have missed or failed to complete in their core classes during the regular school year. Students needing to recover credit for Semester 1 come for the first half of the program to complete work their teachers have prepared for them, while the second half of the program is designated to Semester 2. Math and science courses are held in the morning, while humanities courses are held in the afternoon throughout the three weeks.

Bossov Ballet Theatre Summer Intensive provides comprehensive Russian training (Vaganova method) with a strong emphasis on technique, pointe, partnering, variation and character. The School will be holding a one-week program and a five-week program. Students must audition for acceptance into the program. This year, the intensive program will conclude with a full performance of Swan Lake.

Transitions Academy is a one-week program designed to support incoming freshmen in the transition to MCI. Students take math, English, and MCI orientation classes in the mornings; after lunch in the dining hall, the afternoon portion provides various enrichment opportunities for students to get to know other adults on campus and interact with each other on MCI’s campus before upperclassmen arrive. In past years, these afternoon activities included making movie trailers about MCI for peers who did not attend Transitions, developing and publishing a magazine about the incoming class, MCI “upcycling” recyclables to make useful products, and learning hip-hop.

Summer Orientation and Language Immersion (SOLI) is a required program in late August for international students who are new to MCI. SOLI offers two-course pathways to serve students in individual English language proficiency, and all classes encourage student interaction with various participatory techniques. The SOLI Cup Competition, woven into classes and evening activities, fosters an atmosphere of speaking English, friendly competition, and taking healthy risks. The program concludes with a combined talents celebration and awards ceremony to present the SOLI Cup to the winning squad.

Orientation to MCI and Community:

- Classes and experiences with MCI faculty and staff to foster comfort on campus

- School-year expectations in the dorm to help students establish a routine early

- Local excursions to experience life in Maine with built-in community-building activities

Language Immersion:

- Courses in English literacy, history, and performing arts that encourage student interaction through participatory techniques such as discussion and partner or group work

- Comprehensive testing to ensure students are placed appropriately for the school year
