MCI Receives $15,000 Gift from People's United Bank

PITTSFIELD, ME - Maine Central Institute (MCI) Headmaster Christopher J. Hopkins announced the School has received a $15,000 gift from People's United Bank for the Founders Campaign at a check presentation with Bank President Daniel P. Thornton and MCI's concert band class on the Pittsfield campus.

"We are very grateful for the generous support of People's United Bank," Hopkins said in accepting the check, "and are honored to earn their support for the Founders Campaign, which is truly transformational for MCI."

The $6.5 million Founders Campaign is the largest fundraising effort in MCI's history, and is also the School's first comprehensive campaign. In August 2016, MCI launched the capital campaign as part of the celebration of its Sesquicentennial. According to Hopkins, 302 donors have contributed $5,430,505 to date. A generous $500,000 challenge gift, offered by friends of the School, Tom and Anne Koester of New Jersey, was matched by $500,000 in contributions received through May 4, 2017. The Founders Campaign total of $5.4 million is the largest amount contributed in MCI's history, and includes the first $1-million-dollar pledge in the School's history, made by an anonymous donor.

"We are excited to be a part of the Founders Campaign and support MCI's critical work in academics, the arts, athletics, and the future of the school with their endowment" says Dan Thornton, Maine Market President for People's United Bank. "MCI is a school that provides academic excellence, character development, leadership and opportunity for those attending. People's United Bank is pleased to be a part of the future of the kids attending MCI."

The Campaign supports four distinct areas – academics, the arts, athletics and endowment. Funds will support major renovations in Founders Hall, the original building on MCI's campus, and MCI's endowment. Campaign contributions have already been expended to construct three new multipurpose athletic fields on campus, and on the transformation of 58-year old JR Cianchette Hall to create a Visual and Performing Arts Education Center, the new home of all MCI arts programs – music, drama, Bossov Ballet Theatre, and fine arts.

Norbert W. Young, Jr., President of the Board of Trustees and MCI Class of 1966 said, "The generosity of donors like People's United Bank and our 301 other contributors makes MCI stronger. Since August 2016, alumni and friends have given $1.7 million to this historic campaign. The Founders Campaign represents the promise the Board of Trustees made to MCI's future. We look forward to keeping that promise." Young added.
