Norbert W Young Sr. joined the MCI Faculty in 1941 with a mandate to start a vocational arts program (i.e."Shop"). Known as Norby to students, fellow faculty and friends alike; he focused on celebrating the education for non-college bound students with dignity and respect. In the 1950’s he added coaching responsibilities for both Cross Country and Track; where he developed many award-winning teams melding local students with PG’s from afar. He retired in 1972. Maple Young joined the faculty in 1959 with a mandate to establish an English program for those students in need of unconventional teaching to deal with learning challenges such as dyslexia. Both devoted their lives to MCI while raising three MCI Grads: Delia Young Bickford ’1960, Norbert Jr (Norb) 1966, and Martha Young Worley 1968.

The Norbert and Maple Young Fund for Excellence was established in June of 2022 by incoming President Michael Dow 1984 and the Board of Trustees when Norbert Young, Jr stepped down after serving 22 years as a member of the Board including 11 years as its President. This fund in honor of his father and mother will support the development of today’s and tomorrow’s equally dedicated MCI faculty and staff.
