2019 Inductees Bios

John Wilcox ’89 was MCI Athlete of the Year during his senior year; he played football, basketball, tennis, baseball and track during his three years at the school. John excelled in basketball, where he was named MVP for three years and served as captain during his senior year in which he averaged 17 points and 11 rebounds per game. A three-year member of the football team, John was captain and team MVP as a senior; John also captured the Eastern Maine Championship for shotput during his senior year on the track team. Academically, John received the Roderic Smith Award, attended Boys State, received the MEA Award for Writing, and participated in MCI’s French Club and the Cultural Exchange Club. John is a clinical associate professor of occupational therapy at the University of New Hampshire.

Becky Vaughan Walker ’93 was a three-sport athlete who starred as a pitcher and went on to a Hall of Fame college career at the University of Maine at Farmington. During her freshman year at MCI, Becky compiled a 16-3 pitching record, giving the Huskies a first-place standing in eastern Maine and state runners up in Class B. During her junior year, the Huskies were 18-2, winning the Eastern Maine championship. Becky earned all-state honors and was named the team’s defensive MVP while batting .433. As a senior, the team was 12-3, advancing to the Eastern Maine semifinals. Becky received MVP honors. Becky was also a four-year athlete on the basketball team and played one year of soccer. Becky is a kindergarten teacher for SAD#53 and continues to coach girls in pitching windmill, having served as an assistant softball coach for MCI.

Sam Marzenell ’99 is the only golfer in MCI history to win three individual state golf championships - in 1996, 1997 and 1998. His 1998 title earned him a berth in the New England Regional Championship. Sam’s MCI golf teams won the Class B state title in 1997, and the team was state runners-up in 1996 and 1998. The team also won the Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference title in 1998. He was 13-0 in high school matches during his senior year and was selected Portland Press Herald’s Golfer of the Year. Sam also won the Alden MacDonald Junior Tournament at Sugarloaf and was the Big “I” state qualifier for nationals. Sam also played first singles tennis as a senior at MCI. After MCI graduation, he attended the University of Maine at Farmington where he won 15 college golf events. Sam worked ten years as a PGA pro at Cape Arundel Golf Club. He is now a school teacher in RSU# 1 in Bath, Maine.

Amanda Asaro ’08 was MCI Athlete of the Year during her senior year. While active in soccer and basketball, Amanda’s strongest sport was track, where she was a star at MCI and later ran at Division I Central Connecticut State University. Amanda is arguably MCI’s best girls distance runner ever. She currently is the school record holder in 1600, 3200, 4x100, and 4x800. She has seven of the top 10 800 times, 9 of the top 10 1600 times, and 8 of the top 10 3200 times. She was a five-time KVAC individual and relay champion and a five-time KVAC individual and relay runner-up. A two-time team MVP, Amanda was a very good soccer player and was named KVAC Class B Defensive Player of the Year in basketball as a junior. Amanda decided to pursue track and ran indoor as an independent athlete as a senior, where she won the mile and finished second in the 2 mile. Amanda resides in New Hampshire, where she works in the healthcare administration.
