English as a Second Language (ESL)

Build Your Future in English at Maine Central Institute
For international students, learning English is about more than mastering a language—it's about gaining the confidence, skills, and opportunities needed to thrive in school, college, and life. At MCI, our English as a Second Language program is designed to help students achieve exactly that.
Through personalized instruction, small class sizes, and a supportive learning environment, MCI's ESL program empowers students to strengthen their English proficiency while fully participating in an American high school experience.

MCI's ESL curriculum is carefully designed to support students at every stage of their English-learning journey. Our language learning is also integrated with meaningful academic content, allowing students to develop English skills while studying important subjects.
ESL Integrated Skills I and II:
Students whose English proficiency is approaching the intermediate level begin developing the academic skills necessary for success in Integrated Skills I. As students advance, they continue refining their language skills through rigorous academic practice. Integrated Skills II prepares learners for college-preparatory humanities classes by focusing on advanced reading comprehension, academic writing, critical thinking, and effective communication.
ESL Advanced Academic Writing:
For students approaching fluency, this course serves as a bridge to mainstream academic coursework. Students learn how to conduct research, analyze complex texts, develop persuasive arguments, and participate in structured debates. By the end of the course, students possess the skills needed to excel in college-level writing and discussion.
ESL U.S. History:
This engaging course introduces students to key events that shaped American history and culture. From Native American civilizations through the Civil War, students explore historical events while expanding vocabulary, improving academic writing, conducting research, and participating in collaborative discussions. The course helps students develop the cultural understanding and critical thinking skills needed for success in American schools and beyond.
ESL Integrated Science:
Designed for beginning-level English learners, this course provides a strong foundation in scientific vocabulary and concepts. Through hands-on learning and engaging investigations, students develop the language and content knowledge necessary to succeed in future science courses. The curriculum aligns closely with MCI's Earth and Space Science program, ensuring students are well-prepared for mainstream science classes.
