Sustainability at MCI

MCI is continuing to focus on environmental sustainability initiatives on campus and within the school community.  Check out some of our current initiatives below.

Buildings and Grounds
  • Use Student Garden that teaches sustainability and provides food to the cafeteria
  • 100% organic lawn care program
  • All custodial services are on current green standards
  • Perform constant energy upgrades including:
    • Replacement windows
    • Additional insulation
    • Newer efficient boilers
    • 7 day programmable thermostats
    • Converted High Bay light to efficient super T8 in both gymnasiums
  • One of the top 10 recyclers in the town of Pittsfield with recycling in every building on campus
  • Use geothermal heating system in our Math and Science building

Food Services
  • Recycle all paper, plastic and glass
  • Utilize vegetable trim and plate scraps for a local pig farmer to help offset his feed cost
  • Use as much produce from MCI Student Garden as is grown which equals less fossil fuels to deliver imported produce
  • Supply a local entrepreneur with the used deep fryer oil for conversion to bio-diesel processed here in Pittsfield
  • Estimated recycling effort is greater than 95%
