Why should our son/daughter enroll at Maine Central Institute? Maine Central Institute will provide your son or daughter with a very comprehensive academic and extracurricular program in a safe, caring, supportive environment. We will both encourage and challenge your child. MCI is a place where students with average to above average ability can excel at any level. It is a place that will look out for your child's best interests. How can we afford to send our son/daughter to Maine Central Institute? No student should be discouraged from applying to MCI due to financial reasons. We are committed to providing financial aid to as many qualified students as possible if their parents cannot afford to pay the full tuition. Banking institutions provide affordable and convenient payment options, specifically designed for independent school families. Please contact our admissions office for more information. How is Maine Central Institute accredited? MCI is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges. We are a member of such professional associations as Maine Association of Independent Schools (MIBS); Independent School Association of Northern New England (ISANNE); National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS); and Maine Principals Association. How will we be able to communicate with our son/daughter at Maine Central Institute? Communication with your son or daughter is very easy. Every residence hall has several telephones; each boarding student has email capability in his or her dorm room; students can send or receive faxes on campus; and each student has a personal mailbox located in the student lounge area. When will we receive academic reports about our son/daughter? MCI strongly believes in parental involvement in a student's education. Bi-weekly academic progress reports are sent to parents, either via fax or mail. Parents are encouraged to contact the academic department with any questions or concerns regarding their child. Individual teachers can also be contacted via email or voice mail. What is the procedure if our son/daughter gets sick? MCI employs a full-time registered nurse who oversees a well-equipped infirmary. MCI's physician is located within 2 miles of our campus and the Sebasticook Valley Hospital is within 3 miles. When ill during the academic day, students will stay in the infirmary under the care of the school nurse. What if our son/daughter requires a special diet? MCI's food service staff will make every effort to accommodate your child's dietary needs. Please advise the admissions staff at the time of enrollment of such needs. What is Maine Central Institute's policy regarding smoking, drinking, and drugs? MCI's campus is to be smoke, alcohol and drug free. In Maine, it is illegal to possess or use tobacco products if one is under the age of 18. Any student who, while school is in session or at any school-sponsored event/function, is found to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs, in possession of alcohol or drugs, or to have drug paraphernalia will face harsh and immediate consequences. Therefore, a resident student at MCI is prohibited from using alcohol or drugs at any time. MCI reserves the right to conduct an alcohol or drug test if reasonable suspicion exists. How will our son/daughter's study habits be supervised? Study halls are of the utmost importance. This is an opportunity to do homework and to get academic help if needed. For boarding students, mandatory study hall will also be held each night, Sunday through Thursday from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. A student earning all B's or better on both effort and numerical grades qualifies for honors study. Those students will be allowed to use the study hall time as they wish in their own dorms. How safe and secure is the campus and community? MCI takes the issue of safety on campus very seriously. Although the community of Pittsfield has a very low crime rate, precautions are in place, both on campus and in the community, to deter crimes from occurring. Does Maine Central Institute monitor the student access to the Internet? Absolutely! Filtering software is installed on our network to prevent students from accessing inappropriate material on the Internet. Each student needs to have student identification and have signed an Acceptable Use Form (also signed by the parent). Violations of the acceptable use policy will result in immediate disciplinary action. What colleges have Maine Central Institute graduates attended? MCI graduates have gone on to some of the finest colleges and universities in the world, including Harvard University, Georgetown University, Rochester Institute of Technology, Bates College, Fairleigh Dickinson University, Colby College, and many more. Please see our complete listing under the Academic section. What is the dress code? The MCI dress code encourages neatness, good taste, and maturity. Students are expected to take pride in their own personal grooming and attire. MCI's dress code was created to help reduce socioeconomic distinctions and cost factors for parents, and to help promote higher standards in both behavior and academic performance. The complete dress code can be found by following the link below. Are boarding students responsible for doing their own laundry? Yes. Laundry facilities are located in the lower floor of each residence hall. Residential Hall staff members have the key responsibility of ensuring that all students achieve personal as well as academic growth. How much spending money will our son/daughter require? Every student's personal needs will vary and the amount of spending money available to the student should be agreed upon between you and your child. We encourage boarding students to keep their personal money in the school's safe located in our business office. How do students get to and from the airport or bus station when travel is necessary? MCI will provide transportation to and from the Bangor International Airport and the Bangor and Waterville bus stations on designated vacation departure and return dates. Students transported at times other than vacation dates may be charged $25.00 per trip. What happens if roommates don't get along? Our residence halls are organized to promote tolerance and multiculturalism. Students are strongly encouraged to have roommates from another country. However, sometimes personalities do not blend and we will make every effort to accommodate students in such situations. What do boarding students do on weekends? Weekends are a time for fun and relaxation as well as for experiencing life in Maine. Activities may include sporting events, ballet, skiing or snowboarding, movies, shopping, plays, concerts, hiking, or just spending time with each other. Residential students may elect to spend time with their host families, enjoying life with an American family. What is the social environment like at Maine Central Institute? Maine Central Institute's hallmark is its safe, caring, and supportive atmosphere. With our multicultural population, we are especially aware that we must all take care of each other, Respect, appreciation, and concern for one another are fostered in countless ways. Our day and residential students have found a unique way of coming together; this is the attitude our state is known for - welcoming, accepting, and friendly!
