Library Information

General Guidelines

No food or drink in the library.

Students must always have a pass signed by a teacher to enter the library. Please sign in when you arrive and sign out if you leave before the end of the period. Note that you must have permission to leave before the end of the period.

Please work quietly and respect others.

Treat library materials with care.

Computers
Library computers are for academic use only.

All computer users must sign an MCI Acceptable Use Policy before using any computer on campus.

No games, personal e-mail, chat rooms, shopping, or other non-academic uses are permitted.

Photocopier
Students may use the library photocopier with the permission of the library staff.

Copies made for academic use should be entered under the appropriate academic department code.

Copies made for personal use are twenty cents per page, and may be made before or after school.

Circulation/Borrowing Policy

—Policy pertaining to students
Students may borrow books for 3 weeks. A book may be renewed if there is no one waiting for it. The number of items borrowed at one time is at the discretion of the library staff.

Reference materials may be borrowed overnight with permission of the librarian.

Audio tapes may be borrowed for 2 weeks.

Video tapes may be borrowed for 1 week.

CDs may be borrowed for 1 week.

New check outs will not be allowed if there are overdue materials or lost materials for which the patron owes replacement costs.

—Policy pertaining to faculty
Faculty will have an unlimited borrowing period, but are asked to return materials in a reasonable amount of time. All items should be returned at the end of the school year or renewed for summer use.

Overdues
Notices will be sent to students via their homerooms once a month, beginning the second month of each school session. They will be sent during the first week of each month.

If materials are more than 1 month overdue, a notice will be sent home addressed to parents/guardians, informing them of the replacement cost of overdue items.

If there is no response within 2 weeks after mailing the notices home, the matter will be referred to the Dean of Students.

There will be no fines charged for overdue materials.

Damage and Loss Replacement Policy:

Students and other Patrons will be charged for materials damaged beyond repair and use and lost materials:

If a student is still enrolled in school:
· a bill will be sent home
· a copy of the bill will go to the academic office
· grades will be withheld until the bill is paid
· for residential students, a copy of the bill will go to the Business Office
· no library or classroom text books will be issued to students with outstanding bills

If a student is a graduating senior or a transferring student:
· a bill will be sent home
· a copy of the bill will go to the Academic Office and the Business Office
· grades will be withheld until the bill is paid
· for residential students, a copy of the bill will go to the Business Office
· no diploma will be issued until the bill is paid
· transcripts will be withheld until the bill is paid

Charges to be assessed

Actual replacement cost of item plus $5.00 processing fee per item.

If an item is out of print, i.e., can't be replaced, the price of a similar item in print, or average cost of similar items, plus a $5.00 processing fee per item.

Interlibrary Loan (ILL) Policy and Procedure

Purpose:
To supplement the MCI library collection when a specific, or comparable, item is not available here.

Authorized to borrow:
All students, faculty and staff whose borrowing privileges at MCI are in good standing.

Limits:
Students -- 3 items at a time
Faculty -- no limits

Requesting Procedures:
Submit as much information as is known about the item requested to the library staff (i.e., title, author, publication date, etc.). Items may be identified from a number of sources. When researching a subject, try the URSUS catalog.

Loan period:
This varies by item and lending library. Materials must be returned to MCI at least 2 days prior to lending library's due date for return shipping.

Fees:
There is no charge to MCI students, faculty or staff for ILL. However, if an item is damaged or lost, the patron is responsible for charges set by the lending library. Failure to pay results in the same action as set in the MCI circulation policy (see above). Exception: when a faculty member borrows several items at once for a class research project, the return shipping fee will be charged to that faculty member's academic department.
